Geography (draft)
At HCC we seek to inspire an interest in the world around us. We want students to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to make greater sense of the world by organising and connecting information and ideas about people, places, processes and environments. We want them to analyse complex information that increases their ability to understand what is happening locally and in the wider world.

"Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that".
Michael Palin.
What makes us special?
We have a dedicated team of three subject specialists, all of whom have degrees in Geography and a passion for the subject both inside and outside the classroom. We teach a range of engaging and relevant topics in KS3, and we follow the Edexcel A specification at GCSE. Our teachers are committed to sparking students' interest in the awe and wonder of the world around us. In recent years our students have achieved some of the best GCSE Geography results in our trust and in Devon.
Assessment
At KS3 our students complete an end-of-unit assessment on all nine of the topics taught over three years. Formative assessment is ongoing throughout each topic my their class teacher. We always feed back to students on their assessments in order for them to continually improve.
Progression & careers
Geography is well known as a subject that links to all other subjects in the curriculum, so a GCSE in Geography is a stepping stone to a whole range of opportunities. A good grade will help to move you on to any AS, Applied A-Level or BTEC course. Students may want to continue their study of Geography as a subject or take a course such as a BTEC National in Travel and Tourism which has a more work-related approach.
The skills developed can lead to employment opportunities in journalism, media, engineering, ICT, travel and tourism, environmental management, marketing, business management and teaching. Geographers are everywhere!
